Steps of the Learning Process

The ability to learn something new is a fantastic ability of human beings. We are able to acquire an enormous volume of information and new skills the course of life.

In fact, the learning process is so clear and present in our daily life that can be glimpsed at all times, even now: while you are reading, is already learning! And if it continues, is about to learn about the process of learning!

But how so? After all, learning is not pure process of acquiring knowledge? In fact, the acquisition is only the first step. The learning process has a broader nature. If we analyze what in fact would “learn” we might associate it with any new faculties aggregate the individual through the scientific or empirical, fruit or not of his will.

However, learning only really happens when it goes through three stages, the acquisition, retention and application of knowledge.

Note that these steps occur at different times. Attend a class or read a book, for example, it is only the beginning. The time to have access to information and try to understand it. Only a single purchase does not work and the lack of understanding that these phases are different is what makes many people become frustrated with the learning process.

The learning process steps run as follows:

    • Step acquisition : is the first contact with the new information. At this stage, you are trying to understand what they are reading, watching or listening. You are just getting this new information, but in a superficial way in which it is stored in short-term memory. Tip: You can use the tools of Notes  or Mind Maps to arrange text, audio and images that you have in the classroom, this will help the next steps.
    • Step retention : when it makes the memorization of the acquired information. This step, which many people forget that there is the stage where you will transfer the short-term memory information for the long-term memory. Tip: At this stage beyond Mind Maps you can use FlashCards to store the content.
    • Application stage : it is the last time this cycle, as it applies to information in practice. Typically, the learning of new knowledge is intended to apply it to any concrete situation, even taking a test or preparing a presentation. Thus, the practice will depend on what you are studying. Tip: Use the Quizzes to test your knowledge and help in the retention of the content.

It is a record of graphical method of information which significantly favors the processes of organization, hierarchy, memorization, synthesis and creation of knowledge.

The mind mapping uses resources that stimulate different areas of the brain, creating new connections between information, which makes this tool effectively operates in both the first stage and in the second stage of the learning process.

It can also be used in the application step. However, there are issues that depend on this technique. This applies to both practice writing, producing dissertations and monographs, as learning a new technique, deliberate solving exercises and practices.
