Whenever we discussed a lot of the learning styles and over the years there has already been many ideas and theories about it . For example, the ancient Greeks believed that the god Hermes gave a certain amount of intelligence to every person and that intelligence was essentially an aspect of his fate. However, modern theories are not as drastic. Next, we will examine the theories around each of the learning styles and how to identify which one is best suited to each and it can help them to study in a more effective manner.
One of the main theories of learning styles is the theory VARK (by its acronym in English to refer to the words visual, auditive, reading and kinesthetic) . The VARK theory divides students into four categories:
- Read / Write
Before we begin to discuss what each of these categories implies, it is important to clarify that these are just learning preferences – no method is effective alone and when combined two theories may have an outcome even more effective.
Students with visual learning style are not good with written texts but can assimilate and images, graphics, diagrams, videos and other learning materials that style. Visual students also tend to draw their way of thinking as a way to communicate their ideas as much to themselves as to others.
Tips: Online classes or videos are a good way to start studying at home. Use pictures to help you remember certain ideas or concepts. Using Mind Maps can be an intuitive way to represent a flow of thought and the use of flashcards with pictures can be very useful in the study and memorization. See an example below:
The students learn best when they hear it ‘s a video lesson or when listening to music to study . This type of learning also favors the setting content in the classroom or learning through video lessons. These students are generally slower to read than students of other learning styles; often prefer to listen instead of taking notes.
Tip: Of all the styles may be to more than fits the traditional model of study in the classroom. And to render even more in their studies out of the classroom these students can record the lessons to review the content at a later or additional studies with videos available online. One tip is to also include videos or voice files of your notes. See the example that we created:
3) Read / Write:
These students learn best by reading or writing because they feel extremely comfortable with information that is displayed in a text format such as lists, books or manuals. They usually take the word-for-word notes and learn best from teachers who include a lot of information on sentences pronounced. When presented with visual information, they benefit from transferring the information to text, especially in lists.
Tip : In addition to taking notes in class, the amount of resources available online for those who are willing to read / write is impressive. To leave their most interesting notes you can include videos, links and images and make them more complete. See the example that we created:
Read and reread the notes notes gives a significant advantage by helping with content faster recall.
This type of learning requires practice and movement. This type of student needs external stimulus, otherwise it may lose interest. The thought is usually larger, take notes according to their reasoning and not usually what the teacher says in class.
Tip: Whenever possible, try to arrange the information even if it is your way, look also exercise the knowledge, exercise causes there is greater interest in the subject. To study well, you must create an immersive environment if possible. See the big quiz we created as an example:
Each student can combine two or more styles even if there is a predominant. It is best to know the advantages of each, the student can and should explore better each. In addition, when students have a clearer understanding of how they want to receive the information, the teacher / reader can react accordingly. And when we take into account our learning preferences to decide the learning environment, we as students engage in more, this can only be a good thing.
There are many online VARK tests if you must know what are your preferences and what your learning style. Gives this VARK test.
